The African American Historical Alliance receives award from the
SC African American Heritage Commission

On January 28th 2011 at the Township Auditorium in Columbia SC, the African American Historical Alliance was recognized for its contributions to furthering the knowledge of African American history in South Carolina with the Herbert DeCosta, Jr. Trailblazer Award. The Trailblazer award is given at the discretion of the SC African American Heritage Commission to an organization or individual who has been a trailblazer in the preservation of African American history and culture.

The African American Historical Alliance of South Carolina earned this award because of its work in recognizing and honoring South Carolina African Americans who fought in the American Civil War.

The award carries the name of Herbert A. Decosta, Jr. who served faithfully on the African American Historical Commission and made many significant contributions to preservation efforts in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
